Training Your Dog To Be A Bodyguard

Most states regulate and license dog trainers, especially those that will be training dogs as bodyguards and attack dogs. If you live in one of these states or don't know exactly what you are doing, you really should not attempt to train your own bodyguard dog. You may think that you have the dog trained to obey your every command, until a situation comes up that you didn't prepare for and the dog responds on instincts. This is a great way to get sued and have your bodyguard put down.

That being said, if you are proficient in animal training, then there are many ways to train your dog so that he will be an effective bodyguard. The first thing to think about is the breed. Although it is not the only factor, breed plays an important role in whether a dog can be a bodyguard or not. A favorite breed for police K-9 units and drug enforcement units happens to be the German Shepherd. This breed is incredibly smart and highly trainable. They make excellent bodyguards because of their trainability and willingness to please you. Because they are a working breed, they thrive when they feel like they have a job to do.

As stated before, the breed is not the most important factor when deciding whether your dog can be a bodyguard. The dog's temperament is very important as well as his character. For a dog to be trained for bodyguard status, he should be slightly territorial and have the ability to be aggressive. This does not mean that the dog is always aggressive toward anyone that comes near his home, but that they should be able to tell a friend from an intruder and act accordingly. If you have a dog that is too aggressive, bodyguard training could only feed the aggression and make the dog think that his behavior is being rewarded.

When you are training your dog to be a bodyguard, consider the characteristics you would desire in a human bodyguard then think about how you could instill those into your dog. For example, a bodyguard is a confident person that does not shy away from danger. If your dog hides under the bed during a lightning storm, you may have some work to do before transforming him into a true bodyguard. Another characteristic you would require in a bodyguard is the ability to judge characters and situations, acting accordingly toward both. With your dog, you want to make sure they are not aggressive and territorial all the time and toward all people. They should be able to respond to potential threats through certain words you speak and the tone in which you speak them.

Once you are prepared to train your dog to be your bodyguard, you may wish to enlist the help of a professional, or at least read up on the different techniques. Many times different "props" will be used, such as a Bite Suit. This allows the dog to be trained to attack a person that is posing a threat against you. Never wear the Bite Suit yourself if you are training your own dog to be a bodyguard. It is very confusing for a dog to be trained to attack his owner. These are just some of the tips that you will find helpful in transforming your lovable mutt into a loyal bodyguard.
